Ortopedia Técnica Mayor has recently acquired a novel anatomical measurement system, the latest generation Fast Scan R scanner, being the first orthopedics in the Canary Islands to have this method.

The use of CAD-CAM technology (computer-aided design and manufacturing) in the field of orthopedics has represented a significant advance in the manufacture of prostheses and orthoses, with Ortopedia Técnica Mayor pioneering the use of this 3D computer program in the Canary Islands.

Applied to orthopedics, CAD-CAM is used in the manufacture of corsets (mainly to treat scoliosis and kyphosis), protective helmets and cranial orthoses (plagiocephaly), cosmetic covers, sockets for prostheses, postural control seats and sleeves for lymphedema in oncological treatments... In all cases, the program reports significant advantages such as shortening manufacturing time, simple and accurate measurement taking, and improving patient management and monitoring.

If we talk, precisely, about the latter, the use of CAD-CAM has also meant an improvement in their treatment. Thanks to the scanner, the measurement taking is painless and does not require contact, unlike the traditional method of taking impressions with plaster, which, for many patients and especially in the case of children, is uncomfortable and even traumatic. In addition, this type of technique can be performed on an outpatient basis and in newborns and bedridden people.

CAD-CAM has proven to be a useful tool in the field of orthopedics. However, if its use is not linked to technical knowledge and professional experience, its functionalities will be of little use. In recent years, Ortopedia Técnica Mayor has made a great effort in training and a significant commitment to innovation in treatments in order to provide the best possible response to the needs of its patients. The process of manufacturing a corset using the CAD-CAM system consists of different phases:

Scanning the patient with the FAST SCAN system

Visualization of shapes on the monitor and rectification. If traditionally these calculations were made in an estimated way, now the system allows an adjustment practically to the millimeter.

Milling of the rectified shape on the alphanumeric lathe.

Presentation of the mold in polyurethane and delimitation of cutting areas.

Coating the mold with high density polyethylene.

The work will end with the adaptation of the corset to the patient and subsequent monitoring. On this point, another of the great advantages of CAD-CAM is that it allows the orthopedist to access clinical records, which include photographs, radiographs, digitalizations and corrections that have been made and thus evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment.
