Hospiten Lanzarote, in its continuous work to improve the services offered to patients, incorporates the treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with water vapor.
Dr. Ricardo Bernárdez, urologist at Hospiten Lanzarote, highlights that this is an innovative technique with great benefits for the patient, which through the Rezum system allows interventions to be performed on an outpatient basis and maintain the patient's sexual function.
BPH affects half of the male population from the age of 50, and almost 100% from the age of 80. Dr. Bernárdez emphasizes that it is not prostate cancer, but it significantly affects the patient's quality of life by increasing urinary frequency and urgency. Therefore, the doctor emphasizes, if left untreated, benign prostatic hyperplasia could lead to urinary tract infections, damage to the bladder or kidneys, or incontinence.
The new technique incorporated by Hospiten Lanzarote is minimally invasive, performed with sedation, without general anesthesia and without hospital admission, in a single visit. It consists of administering small amounts of steam to the enlarged prostate. It damages the cells that cause the obstruction and reduces the overall size of the prostate, relieving the symptoms, but also the problem.
In this way, the patient can go home on the same day of the intervention, with a catheter placed that must be maintained for a week and which will later be removed in the hospital.
This treatment is indicated for patients who do not want an invasive treatment or do not do well with the prescribed medical treatment, and may be candidates for this technique depending on the size of the prostate. It is also highly indicated for elderly, complex and high-risk patients, given its minimally invasive nature.
Dr. Bernárdez recalls the importance of check-ups from the age of 40, for early diagnosis, as well as maintaining healthy lifestyle habits such as regular exercise, controlling waist circumference, eating vegetables and fruits, and monitoring fats in the diet. All these factors, the doctor emphasizes, can help with benign prostatic hyperplasia and reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction, diabetes and heart disease.
