All schools in the Canary Islands will have an equality coordinator from next year. The measure, which had already been announced in the regional Parliament by the Minister of Education, Poli Suárez, was presented this Wednesday to the union representatives of the sector and will be implemented through the General Directorate of Planning of Education, Innovation and Inclusion, coordinated by David Pablos.

"In the current school year, 425 educational centers in the Canary Islands, 52%, have had a person responsible for coordinating, through the Innovas Network, the actions, plans, and projects related to equality and affective-sexual and gender education," says Pablos, for whom, however, "having an equality coordinator in our centers cannot be optional."

In that sense, until now, the centers decided if they wanted to belong to the Innovas Network and, if so, whether or not to activate the so-called Equality Axis.

Starting next year, regardless of their membership or not to the aforementioned network, all centers in the Canary Islands will have this figure, which will have time to promote actions related to this line considered strategic by the Ministry.

Canarian identity

Likewise, within the framework of the renewal of the Innovas Network, the participation of only 44% that the centers have had so far in the Axis of social, cultural and historical heritage of the Canary Islands is also considered insufficient.

For this reason, also for the next year, "the programs and projects related to learning linked to our heritage will be reinforced, in addition to offering training to teachers to detect and activate these learnings, existing in the curricula of all subjects and educational levels," added Pablos.

To this end, a line of work will be undertaken to create educational resources based on Canarian heritage, which will be made available to all teachers in the archipelago and for whose design will include classroom teachers who are experts in the field.
