The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, warned this Tuesday that the autonomous governments that do not comply with the law that establishes the distribution of unaccompanied immigrant minors will have to face the "consequences".
In the press conference after the usual annual meeting during King Felipe VI's holidays at the Marivent Palace in Palma, Sánchez stressed that the modification of the immigration law approved by the Courts is "quite clear" regarding the obligation of solidarity of all territories with the Canary Islands, which suffers a "strong extra migratory pressure".
"They have to comply with the law," the president insisted on his position towards the autonomous governments and the presidents "who make it a matter of politics and confrontation with the Government".
The head of the Executive has exposed this position after meeting before the meeting with the king with the president of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, who has asked him to reconsider the decision to distribute unaccompanied minors in the case of the Mediterranean archipelago, which has already exceeded its reception capacity.
Sánchez stressed that the Government has foreseen economic support, which in the case of the Balearic Islands is around 2 million euros, to be able to face this requirement.
He pointed out the fall in irregular immigration flows throughout Spain of 27% so far this year, although he admitted that "this is not happening on the route that affects the Balearic Islands" and added that he has committed to Prohens to maintain a diplomatic effort with those countries of origin and transit to stop this irregular immigration at source.
