The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs updated its travel alert for Spain this Friday to also include the Canary Islands, so that Berlin advises against non-essential travel to all Spanish territory due to the high risk of contracting the coronavirus.
The archipelago was exempt from these recommendations until now, but the situation will change as of December 20, as stated in the new notice. Angela Merkel's Executive justifies the need to take measures in the face of a weekly incidence rate that exceeds 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Germany, one of the main countries sending tourists to Spain, has been modifying its warnings in recent months depending on the prevalence of the virus. This Friday, the German health authorities reported a record number of COVID-19 cases in a single day, 33,777, as well as another 813 deaths from this disease.
