Lack of adapted access for people in wheelchairs

The "sports city" that has just been inaugurated in Costa Teguise has already received the first criticisms, due to the lack of access for people with reduced mobility. This has been denounced by the families of the players who make up the first wheelchair hockey team in the Canary Islands, the Adassa Hockey Club.

The young people had difficulties accessing the facilities this weekend due to the lack of a curb cut. The events occurred during the presentation of the municipality's sports schools, in which more than 1,500 boys and girls from 20 different clubs participated.

"It has taken a lot of effort to start the team project and we found that we couldn't even get on the sidewalk because there is no curb cut anywhere around the field," the players' families told La Voz.

So that their children could access the grass, the families explain that they had to "dismantle some cones from the signage" and use the base and some wooden boards as a ramp, "because the chair alone weighs 130 kilos."

"The mayor told us that they had put wooden ramps for us and it was a lie. It was horrible," they criticized.

"In addition, there were no parking spaces for people with reduced mobility, so they are not complying with the law. Really, the people of Coalición Canaria talk so much, and look what has happened. An event that reflects the neglect of politicians who forget about the usual people, the most vulnerable," they lament.

"They have not publicly apologized to us. They already knew about these deficiencies before the event started and no one did anything, everyone ran away. They have not had the humility to recognize their mistakes. Everyone is quiet so as not to look bad," they conclude.
