The best 30 windsurfers in the world in the freestyle category will meet among the waves and wind of Lanzarote to participate in the PWA Canarias Costa Teguise, one of the most important championships included in the official calendar of events of the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA). In the Canary Islands, this championship will also stop in Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuerteventura, in addition to Lanzarote.
Riders like Kiri Thode (Netherlands) or Steven van Broeckhoven (Belgium), who currently lead the world ranking in that order, will try not only to stay in the top places of the world championship, but will try to win the title in a place that in recent years has been dominated by the Venezuelan José "Gollito" Estredo, several times world champion. The latter athlete is currently third in the 2011 ranking and has won in Lanzarote in the last four editions. Thode and Van Broeckhoven will try to make it difficult for "Gollito".
PWA Islas Canarias Costa Teguise will take place in the tourist town of the municipality of Teguise, on Las Cucharas beach, from June 30 to July 2, and will be attended by half a hundred windsurfers, including the top 30 classified. The event is organized by the company La Santa Surf, with the sponsorship of the Vice-Ministry of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands - through its public company Promotur and within the "Water Sports Experience" program -, the City Council of Teguise, the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Sands Beach hotel.
"Lanzarote has enormous potential"
The excellent weather conditions in Lanzarote and Costa Teguise were one of the most commented aspects in the presentation of this championship, which took place this Tuesday at Sands Beach. "Lanzarote has enormous potential for outdoor sports and in nature, and specifically for water sports such as windsurfing. And Costa Teguise has always lived up to expectations, hosting this event which is one of the most important on the international calendar, and which contributes to placing the island on the international map as a first-class sports destination," said the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés.
The event was also attended by the mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, the Councilor for Tourism of Teguise, Rita Martín, the general director of Tourism Promotion of the Government of the Canary Islands, Rita Hernández, the director of the Hotel Sands Beach, Juan Carlos Albuixech, as well as one of those responsible for La Santa Surf, Lorenzo Seis.
Activities and good weather
During these days, in addition, the beach will have dozens of activities for residents and tourists, such as yoga, music, initiation to water sports, as well as games for the little ones. The organization has also pointed out that the weather conditions predict "one of the most impressive events of this year." The best time to see the riders will be around 11:00 a.m., but to check it accurately you can go to the website www.pwawordtour.com.
