San Bartolomé CF and CD Tinajo showed a lot of respect for each other on Tuesday night during the final of the Arrecife Town Hall Regional Cup. It was not a very attractive match for the more than 400 fans who packed the stands of the Agapito Reyes Viera Municipal Stadium in Altavista, with a notable absence of goal-scoring opportunities generated by both teams. With the score tied at zero, the match concluded, and the final had to be decided from the penalty spot. CD Tinajo was the most successful in the penalty shootout, taking home the first champion trophy of the season.
The first half of the match did not have a clear dominator, with CD Tinajo being the one that came closest to the goal defended by Iván. Most of the game took place in the midfield area, with both teams showing that they were very afraid of each other. No one wanted to make mistakes that could cost them dearly, so the defenders did not complicate their lives and cleared all the balls that came near the area long.
One of the few dangerous actions of the first half occurred in the 12th minute. CD Tinajo stole a ball on the three-quarter line of the field, which allowed them to make a quick play down the right wing. The cross was controlled by Cristo on the edge of the area, and his shot went over the crossbar. The tension increased as the minutes passed, with several scuffles between players during the first half. The score was tied at zero at halftime.
The game did not improve in the second half, although on this occasion it was San Bartolomé who came with a little more danger to the goal defended by Marco Machín. Most of the dangerous actions of the "batateros" (San Bartolomé players) died in the vicinity of the area. Again, the clearest chance of the second half was for CD Tinajo. Gabriel starred in an individual play in the 75th minute, getting past several defenders, and his shot went into the hands of goalkeeper Iván.
The match concluded with controversy, with the San Bartolomé players claiming a possible penalty in stoppage time. Young Jeremy was knocked down inside the area by goalkeeper Marco Machín when he was trying to control a ball. The referee interpreted that the Tinajo goalkeeper had touched the ball first and had won the position against the San Bartolomé player. The match concluded with a goalless draw, and the final of the Arrecife Town Hall Regional Cup had to be decided from the penalty spot.
David Alonso, Yaco, Cristo Tavío, David Pérez, and Nauzet, for San Bartolomé, and Gabriel, Isaac, Sergio, Santi, and Caluka, in the ranks of CD Tinajo, scored the first five shots of each of the teams. In sudden death, Maikel Brito (San Bartolomé) and Adrián (CD Tinajo) were successful with the sixth shot. In the seventh penalty, Jeremy could not beat the CD Tinajo goalkeeper, with Marco Machín guessing the trajectory of the shot. And Viñoly was in charge of endorsing his teammate's save, scoring the winning goal for CD Tinajo.
At the conclusion of the match, the trophy presentation of the Arrecife Town Hall Regional Cup took place. Jacobo Lemes, Sports Councilor of the Arrecife Town Hall, excused his absence from the final as he was out of the island for work reasons. José Antonio Valido, president of the Lanzarote Island Football Delegation, was in charge of presenting the champion trophy to the captain of CD Tinajo.
