The tourist town of Puerto del Carmen, in the municipality of Tías, became the epicenter of triathlon on Saturday, with the celebration of the ninth edition of the Ocean Lava Lanzarote Win4Youth. A sporting event that returns where it was born in 2010, with more than 500 triathletes participating in one of the three modalities arranged by the organization. The British Michael Lavender and the German based in Lanzarote Tessa Kortekaas, were the winners of the queen event of the half distance.
It dawned in Puerto del Carmen and a great sporting atmosphere began to be breathed on Avenida de las Playas. The triathletes arrived at the box area, leaving their bicycles and preparing everything necessary to face a test of these characteristics. At 08:00 the start was given to the queen event, with a route of 1.9 kilometers swimming, 90 kilometers of bicycle and concluding with a 21 kilometer run.
The British Stephen Bayliss was the fastest in completing the swimming segment, and achieving an important advantage with respect to the rest of the participants. His compatriot Michael Lavender was cutting differences in the bicycle segment, and reached the leader practically in the transition zone. And it was in the foot race where Michael Lavender finished sentencing the race in his favor.
Michael Lavender crossed the finish line as the winner with a time of 3 hours, 29 minutes and 22 seconds. The second position was for Luis Hernández from Tenerife (03:33:05) and the third place on the podium was for the British Stephen Bayliss (03:33:15). The race was valid for the Canary Islands Long Distance Championship, a competition that is supervised by the Canary Islands Triathlon Federation.
In the women's category, Tessa Kortekaas, a German based on the island of Lanzarote, made her local status count and took the victory in the queen event of the Ocean Lava Lanzarote Win4Youth. She starred in a race from less to more, being in the bicycle segment and the foot race where she felt more comfortable. The winner crossed the finish line with a time of 4 hours, 25 minutes and 14 seconds. The podium was completed with the second place of Lucy Biddlestone (04:36:29) and the third position of Dácil Hernández (04:38:38).
Iván Díaz and Amber Rombaut, winners of the Olympic distance
One of the categories with the largest number of participants was the Olympic distance, with a route of 1.5 kilometers swimming, 40 kilometers of bicycle segment and 10 kilometers of foot race. The companies Adecco and ING, contributed to this modality a large number of triathletes, who traveled to Lanzarote from different points of the world geography.
Iván Díaz from Lanzarote had a great race and was the absolute winner of the Olympic distance. The winner used a time of 2 hours, 21 minutes and 3 seconds. The podium was completed with the second place of Yeray Suárez (2:23:06) and third was Jonathan Daly (2:25:01).
In the women's category, the winner was Amber Rombaut, with a time of 2 hours, 29 minutes and 35 seconds. Alexandra Sogaard (2:41:28) and Gretta O Connor (2:52:41), completed the podium with the second and third place, respectively.
Harry Holdaway and Mia Leadbeater, winners of the "supersprint"
The Ocean Lava Lanzarote Win4Youth had a "supersprint" modality, aimed at all those athletes who are starting in triathlon and that had a group of young triathletes. The victory in the men's category was for Harry Holdaway, completing the course in a time of 34 minutes 5 seconds. The men's podium was completed with the second position of Sam Murray (35:17) and third was Luis Signorelli (35:22).
In the women's category of the "supersprint" the winner was Mia Leadbeater, crossing the finish line with a time of 36 minutes. Leila Thom (39:25) was the second classified and third would be Sidney Nugent (44:55).
One of the peculiarities of the Ocean Lava Lanzarote Win4Youth is that it distributes medals to the winners of each of the years of birth. The winners were receiving their medals on the podium, concluding the race with the awards ceremony of the queen category. The Sports Councilor of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Lorenzo Reyes, and the Sports Councilor of the City Council of Arrecife, Francisco Javier Aparicio, were present at the coronation ceremony of the winners.
