The International Canoe Federation decided this Thursday in Tokyo to choose Lanzarote as the venue in 2021 for the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships Surfski World Championship, the world championship of the sea kayak specialty.
Both the president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, and the Minister of Sports, Patricia Pérez, have congratulated the Marlines de Lanzarote Canoeing Club, and specifically its board of directors chaired by José María García, "for being the main architects of this achievement, which will undoubtedly contribute to increasing the prestige that the island already enjoys internationally in the sports field".
The mayor of Arrecife, Eva de Anta, has also welcomed the fact that Lanzarote will host the Kayak del Mar World Championship in 2021 and has also congratulated the Marlines Canoeing Club, "which has the support of the Department of Sports" for achieving with its effort and good results that our candidacy was successful in Tokyo where the resolution was announced".
The Arrecife City Council points out that, from the beginning, it supported the island being the venue, not only receiving the Club in the Consistory in February but also sending a video and a letter to Tokyo where the mayor herself, in English, commented on the benefits of the celebration in Lanzarote. "Having a world championship of these characteristics in Arrecife would also be economically beneficial for the Island, in addition to what it means for the tourism and sports sector," said De Anta.
More than a thousand paddlers from 40 different countries
CC has also joined the congratulations through the deputy secretary of the Local Committee in Arrecife and former Councilor for Sports of the capital's Consistory, Jacobo Lemes, who has highlighted the work of a club made up of a group of young sea lovers "and that is standing out for the training of great paddlers who compete in different sports events, leaving the Arrecife and Lanzarote flag very high".
Likewise, the nationalist leader has stressed how important this news is for an island for the promotion of sports tourism. "It is the result of the work and training carried out by young paddlers. They have been the ones who have made the name of Arrecife and Lanzarote known internationally in this modality," Lemes pointed out, noting that "the first figures are already beginning to be considered and it is estimated that in 2021 more than a thousand paddlers from 40 different countries will arrive in Lanzarote to participate in the world championship".
