Eduardo Brito from RCN Arrecife wins the Canary Islands Optimist Cup

With strong wind from the N direction, the three races that brought this Sunday's Optimist Canary Islands Cup - César Manrique Lanzarote Winter Cup, organized by the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, to an end could be held.

The local sailor Eduardo Brito, repeated among the first, as he had done on Saturday, from which he was able to discard an eleventh place. Brito won the first two races on Sunday in a tough fight with Samuel Beneyto from RCN Gran Canaria who would finish second overall, after repeating in that same position in the three Sunday races. Both sailors finished with 9 points, with the balance tipping in favor of the Lanzarote native as he had achieved two first places to Beneyto's one.

The title of the Canary Islands Cup was for Eduardo Brito, an Under 13 who surpassed rivals with more experience on the race course. The third place overall went to the Swede Lagerberg Calle with a total of 12 points. After him, Alberto Morales finished fourth, Mariano Stinga fifth, both from RCN Arrecife.

Eduardo Brito repeated trophy by being not only the winner of the general and also of the Sub 13 category, in that same category the second place went to Sergio Carbajo, sailor of the RCN Gran Canaria. The third drawer of the Sub 13 podium was occupied by Juan Afonso Silva of the RCN Arrecife.

Among the girls, Claudia Sánchez from Gran Canaria led the absolute women's classification with a 14th place overall, while Gabriela Gil from RCN Arrecife obtained the victory in the Sub 13 women's category.

The awards ceremony was held on Sunday afternoon at the RCN Arrecife, presided over by Joaquín Blanco Roca, president of the Canary Islands Sailing Federation, and Julio Romero Ortega, president of the organizing Club, accompanied by other directors and representatives from Tenerife, Gran Canaria and the RCNA itself.

The Optimist Canary Islands Cup - César Manrique Lanzarote Winter Cup, qualified the first 20 sailors to participate in the next Spanish Cup.

The Lanzarote representation in the Spanish Cup

Resounding success of the Lanzarote sailors who achieved the classification of 7 athletes among the first 20 of the Canary Ranking, in addition to achieving the victory of a Lanzarote native for the first time in the history of the Cup, as well as the first female achievement by Mar Betancort Fernández.

The Canary team in the Spanish Cup will be made up of 7 sailors from RCN Arrecife, 7 from RCN Gran Canaria and 6 from RCN Tenerife.
