You can't ask for more from CICAR Lanzarote Ciudad de Arrecife, after putting up a fight and making things difficult for Rocasa Gran Canaria in the final of the Canary Islands Government Cup played on Wednesday afternoon at the Antonio Moreno Insular Pavilion in Telde. The match was even until the last ten minutes, a phase of the match in which San José Obrero felt the fatigue and the few rotations available on the bench.
The first minutes were of probing on the playing court, with minimal differences and both teams treating each other as equals. The absence of pivots Miriam Páez and Leticia Cobo forced David Betancort to try different situations in attack, a position that Celia López and Lorena Montilla alternated throughout the match. In addition, in defense, the San José Obrero coach tried different situations.
In the middle of the first half, Rocasa Gran Canaria, with a 3-0 run, obtained a three-goal lead, and Veronika Dvorakova was in charge of breaking the locals' run. With three minutes left until halftime, Eider Poles scored a seven-meter shot, forcing David Betancort to request the first timeout of the match (14-11).
After the instructions from the bench, Rocasa Gran Canaria established the maximum difference by taking advantage of a loss of possession by the visitors. The first half of the match ended with goals from Thalyta Almeida and Celia López, putting the score at 15 to 13 with which they reached the end of the first thirty minutes of the match.
Rocasa Gran Canaria pulled away on the scoreboard in the first minutes of the second half, reaching a five-goal advantage (21-16), forcing the coach of CICAR Lanzarote Ciudad de Arrecife to request a new timeout. The players of the Lanzarote team did not give up, managing to get within two goals on the scoreboard and having attacking actions to reduce the differences.
In the last ten minutes of the match, the physical wear and tear and the greater depth of the Rocasa Gran Canaria bench were noticeable. CICAR Lanzarote Ciudad de Arrecife lacked oxygen and legs in the final stretch of the match, a circumstance that was used by the rival to definitively pull away on the scoreboard.
With the score of 31 to 23, the match came to an end, with Rocasa Gran Canaria being proclaimed champion of the Canary Islands Government Cup. CICAR Lanzarote Ciudad de Arrecife is now focusing on the Copa de la Reina qualifier that they will have to play next Tuesday, October 29, against Elda Prestigio.
