The Councilor for Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariano H. Zapata, and the Councilor for Public Works of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Jacobo Medina, recently held a meeting to advance the coordination of priority actions for the island of Lanzarote. Specifically, regarding the accumulation of diseased palm trees on the sides of the island roads.
The regional councilor, Mariano H. Zapata, reaffirmed his "commitment to listen to the island's requests", and stated that "this issue has been brought to the attention of the affected areas so that they act as soon as possible on this problem that affects the image of Lanzarote and its roads."
The Councilor for Public Works of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Jacobo Medina, expressed his "concern about the more than 2,000 palm trees that have accumulated on the sides of the island roads (LZ)", whose management is the responsibility of the area he directs.
"For the Island Council, the landscape of Lanzarote has always been a priority and the accumulation of these remains on the transit routes is leading to a bad image," Medina detailed, who also expressed his "concern about the countless stumps derived from these fellings." "Improving the image of our island is an essential issue, so knowing the interest and attention of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy is very good news for Lanzarote."
Likewise, both leaders highlighted, also linked to the palm trees of the island, the work that both institutions have been developing since 2023 to combat the plague of Diocalandra Frumenti, through an agreement. Thanks to this agreement, more than 83,000 palm trees have already been inspected and counted and nearly 3,200 specimens have already received endotherapy treatment, a figure that will increase significantly in the coming months.
