The members of the Small and Medium Enterprise Transport Association meet today to study the measures they will take against the Cabildo. In this way, they exhaust the open dialogue route by which they demand that the First Institution give them the receipts corresponding to the fee they have to pay for using the Zonzamas landfill.

The main problem facing the members of the Association is that the First Institution is demanding money from them for this tax, which did not officially begin to be charged until April of last year, although the service began operating in 2003. The carriers have requested the Cabildo to return the receipts that were issued to verify that their trucks actually deposited the waste in the landfill.

"The problem is that now the Cabildo is trying to charge us the waste tax that does not correspond to the license plates of the vehicles we have in our companies," explained the president of the association, Antonio Alexis.

Situation

When a waste tax was established, the carriers agreed. However, the system failed from the first moment since the Temporary Union of Companies, in charge of managing the landfill, did not have the infrastructure to collect this tax. Thus, when the carriers went to the place and asked how to pay this tax, they were told that they did not have to do it for the moment. This led those affected to understand that this tax had not yet come into effect.

However, now carriers receive invoices for the value of what they did not pay at that time. In fact, in addition to not corresponding to their trucks, they have found that they also have to face late payment interest. There are even cases of bank account seizures.

The SME Transport Association has exposed this problem to the presidents and councilors who have passed through the Cabildo since 2003. However, since then they have not yet reached an agreement. This has meant that carriers are in a situation of defenselessness that leads them to take measures to solve the problem.
