The School Councils of the Canary Islands educational centers will promote, starting next school year 2005/2006, educational measures that promote real and effective equality between men and women, according to the Government of the Canary Islands.
One of its members, who will be chosen from among all its components, will be in charge of this task. This is contemplated in the beginning-of-course circulars, both for Infant and Primary and for Secondary, which will soon be published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands.
In addition, the School Council will have among its powers to propose measures and initiatives that favor coexistence in the center, equality between men and women and the peaceful resolution of conflicts in all areas of personal, family and social life. For its part, the Educational Inspection will ensure compliance and application of the measures aimed at promoting real equality between both sexes.
With the entry into force of the Organic Law on Comprehensive Protection Measures against Gender Violence, in December of last year, this principle, which was already present in educational centers, is further emphasized, if possible. Hence, the Ministry deems it appropriate to include among the powers of the School Councils the power to propose measures and initiatives that favor real equality between both sexes.
This aims to deepen the transmission of values of respect for the dignity of women and equality between men and women in the educational field.
