The Socialist Group in the Yaiza City Council, through its councilor Carmen Guadalupe, has presented a motion that will be defended in the next municipal plenary session for the conservation and adaptation of the threshing floors of the municipality. The proposal seeks to turn these historical spaces into a living open-air museum that preserves and promotes the island's agricultural tradition.
Carmen Guadalupe highlighted the importance of the threshing floors in the agricultural history of Lanzarote, especially in the town of Uga, where onions and other cereals were the main crops. However, she pointed out that "the progressive deterioration of these structures, as well as the cisterns and other agricultural constructions, due to abandonment and the passage of time endangers their conservation."
Citing the chronicler Gregorio Barreto Viñoly, who described the threshing floors as spaces for meeting and community work in ancient times, Guadalupe stressed the importance of recovering these places. "The threshing floors were not only used for threshing, but also served as places for collecting water, wrestling and festivals. Today, unfortunately, they are disappearing, but it is our responsibility as a public administration to ensure their preservation," she said.
The motion of the PSOE of Yaiza urges the City Council to develop a rehabilitation project for the threshing floors, with the aim of preserving the cultural and ethnological heritage of the island. In addition, it is proposed to include the threshing floors in the Municipal Architectural Inventory, as well as the installation of information points that promote their history and cultural value among the population and visitors.
Carmen Guadalupe stressed that similar projects have already been developed in other regions of Spain and in the Canary Islands, many of them financed by European funds. "It is essential that we take measures to ensure that this cultural legacy is not lost and that we can transmit it to future generations," she concluded.
With this motion, the PSOE of Yaiza intends to defend the historical and cultural heritage of the municipality, relying on initiatives that contribute to the recovery and enhancement of the agricultural traditions that marked the way of life of the peoples of Lanzarote.
