The PSOE candidate for the Cabildo of Lanzarote and current councilor of the institution, Manuela Armas, has assured that she has obtained the commitment of the general secretary of Penitentiary Institutions, Mercedes Gallizo, to expedite the transfer of Lanzarote prisoners who are serving sentences in different prisons in the country.
The measure, which will study the return of each inmate, responds to the request made to the socialist representative by the Association for Law and Justice. "It is a satisfaction to start this commitment because we understand that it is a priority need for Lanzarote families and to fulfill the objective of reintegration," Armas said in a statement.
The meeting, held at the headquarters of Penitentiary Institutions in Madrid on April 7, also laid the foundations for the possible creation of a Monitoring Commission to facilitate the true social reintegration of prisoners. Gallizo expressed her willingness for this body to materialize through an agreement involving the councils of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Government of the Canary Islands and the State.
Likewise, it was decided to create a Therapeutic Unit within the Tahíche prison, equipped with professionals from the socio-health field, aimed at promoting the treatment of inmates affected by drug addiction, which is closely linked to crime. In fact, the director of Penitentiary Institutions opted to start training the staff who will be assigned to this service as soon as possible.
The meeting was also attended by the national deputy for the PSOE, Miguel González, and the general director of Treatment and Penitentiary Management, Virgilio Valero.
