The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alicia Vanoostende, defended this Tuesday in Parliament that modern aquaculture has corrective measures to be a "sustainable" practice, although she has pledged to be "sensitive" to the demands of the society of Lanzarote and its institutions, ensuring that she will work jointly with the Cabildo of Lanzarote to resolve the situation that has been generated with the new ordinance, and for which she has blamed Coalición Canaria.
Vanoostede recalled that CC approved in 2018 the Regional Aquaculture Organization Plan (PROAC) that it now denounces, and pointed out that she observed "with maximum surprise" in March of last year how there was a social response in Lanzarote against aquaculture when the detailed ordering of the areas suitable for this activity was established, as established by the document promoted by Coalición Canaria, which at that time also presided over the Cabildo.
For his part, the socialist deputy Pedro Viera has accused CC of "cynicism" for bringing local initiatives to Parliament with the aim of "wearing down" the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Dolores Corujo, and thus provoking a change of government in the corporation "not by democratic means, but by accomplished facts."
In addition, he has lashed out against "the cowardice and inaction" of Coalición Canaria (CC) in relation to the implementation of marine cages in Lanzarote, as foreseen in the Regional Aquaculture Organization Plan (PROAC) that the nationalists themselves approved. "Now CC presents itself to the citizens of Lanzarote as the saviors of the homeland" and argues that the marine cages are depleting the seabed and the traditional fishing ground, in addition to having been implanted in an area inhabited by cetaceans, Viera has reproached.
"All this could have been avoided if CC had not authorized it," the socialist deputy stressed, who recalled the unanimous position against marine cages by the administrations of Lanzarote.
In his opinion, the leaders of CC are "true incompetents" who now accuse the current Government to hide "their manifest incapacity and their true political cynicism", because by the way the objective is to "wear down" the president of the Cabildo, said Pedro Viera, who has asked the nationalists "not to cheat, although they are used to it."
