The Plenary Session of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, held this Tuesday, has approved the management order of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands by which the Lanzarote Cabildo will assume, from now on, the elaboration of the psychological and social reports that will serve as the basis for the technical opinion of recognition of the degree of disability of the people residing on the island.
This action, of a material and technical nature, will be financed entirely by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families of the regional Executive, which will allocate a total of 181,305 euros to the development of these tasks. This agreement will allow specialized care to be brought closer to the population of Lanzarote, avoiding travel to other islands and speeding up the administrative procedures related to the assessment of the degree of disability, in compliance with Royal Decree 888/2022, which establishes the scales and regulates this process in a unified manner throughout the national territory.
“This agreement represents a fundamental step to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities in Lanzarote, facilitating access to rights, resources and aid in equal conditions”, said the Councilor for Social Welfare and Inclusion of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Marci Acuña.
“Our commitment is to strengthen the social care network with qualified personnel, who will provide their services from the island, with greater proximity and agility in the processes. This is a concrete measure that directly affects the well-being of the most vulnerable people”, he added.

Under this agreement, the Cabildo will be responsible for selecting and managing the technical team in charge of issuing the required reports. The staff will be composed of two Social Workers and a psychologist, who will be hired full-time for the development of the assigned functions. The tasks will be directly supervised by the General Directorate of Disability of the Government of the Canary Islands, and will be carried out in coordination with the Disability Assessment Center of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the competent body in this matter.
“In short”, concludes the Councilor for Social Welfare, “this agreement represents a strategic action to decentralize and optimize social services in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, thus facilitating the exercise of fundamental rights for people with disabilities from their own island environment, without having to travel to other islands”.
