The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have renewed this Tuesday the agreement they have maintained for years for the operation of the University School of Tourism on the island, where the official degree of Bachelor of Tourism is obtained.
The agreement between both institutions has been renewed between the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés, and the rector of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Rafael Robaina Romero, who - together with the vice-rector of the ULPGC, Marcos Peñate, and the island's Minister of Education, Carmen Rosa Márquez - explained that this affiliation agreement between the University and the School of Tourism of the Cabildo of Lanzarote dates back more than two decades, "from that June 19, 1998 in which this center, dependent on the first Island Corporation, was recognized and attached for the first time to the University of Las Palmas as a University School". In that year, the center was authorized to teach the official Diploma in Tourism of the 1998/1999 academic year.
"In view of the current changes in regulations governing the implementation of official degrees and the Law on the Legal Regime of the Public Sector, it has become necessary to renew the commitment between both administrations, in order to modernize and give continuity on the island to the teaching of these official university studies", specified the president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés.
A duration of four years and a capacity of 300 places
The agreement will have a duration of four years and will cover the teaching staff and the capacity of 300 places estimated for the Degree in Tourism of this center, dependent on the Cabildo and the Department of Education.
Through this agreement, the students of the University School of Tourism of Lanzarote will have, as until now, the consideration of students of the ULPGC, with the same rights and obligations that are included in the statutes of the University for all students, as far as they are applicable according to the characteristics of the center and in accordance with the provisions of its own Operating Regulations.
San Ginés again "recognized the trajectory of this model center, from the current management by Eva Crespo and her management team and teaching community, to the thousands of students who in these years have been trained in this School and who currently occupy key positions in the socio-economic activity of Lanzarote and other places".
"A center that since 1993 when it began its journey, and later, in 1998 when it was integrated into the academic offer of the ULPGC, has been exemplary, as a focus of research and reflection on all aspects related to tourism, among other sectors, and that has favored the development of multiple studies and projects that are not only of academic and theoretical interest, but have also contributed to activate and enrich the debate on the strategy, development and growth of Lanzarote as a tourist destination", said the president.
Other agreements signed
Taking advantage of the visit of the rector and the vice-rector of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to the Cabildo, two other agreements have also been signed between the first Island Corporation and the University.
Through these, the Department of Education of the Cabildo of Lanzarote will be responsible for publishing on the virtual platform of the Center for Permanent Training of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria all the information corresponding to the training courses that have been previously supervised and favorably reported by the Vice-Rectorate. This agreement will be for four years and will not entail any financial consideration for the Cabildo.
"This platform will include all the ULPGC's own training, that is, the complementary offer to the official one that the university has, as well as access to the training of other institutions, mainly the Cabildos, with which these agreements are being signed", explained the rector.
On the other hand, in order to plan and manage in Lanzarote the different special training programs that will be developed during the next two years, another collaboration agreement has also been signed between both entities by which one of the special programs available in each academic year will be taught. Among them, the upcoming opening of registrations for the course for people over 55 years of age on European Studies stands out. Within the offer of these courses, the University of Las Palmas is currently developing in other islands various courses for adults such as Canarian Studies, African Studies or Latin American Studies, among others, which depending on the demand and interest of the applicants on the island could also be taught soon in Lanzarote.
"These are training programs for adults that are conceived as the university's contribution to social solidarity care and that aim to increase the cultural level of the community and satisfy its need for knowledge", specified the rector of the ULPG. With these agreements, it is fundamentally about "bringing the university closer to Lanzarote and La Graciosa and vice versa", they stressed.
