The Bar Association of Lanzarote has stated that both the citizens of this island and those of Fuerteventura will suffer "an impairment of their rights", following the decision of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) to remove the Bis Chamber of the Provincial Court, where criminal trials were held in the Courts of Arrecife. Through a statement, it has expressed its "deep discomfort" at this measure and has insisted that it will defend this trial room and try to restore it.

According to the Bar Association, the magistrates who have integrated the different chambers have contributed "decisively to improving the quality of Justice" and have resolved "effectively and within a reasonable time the very high volume of matters they have known". Therefore, these lawyers understand that the criteria established by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) "are not those of necessity, but purely statistical ones". "This moves Justice away from the citizen", they have criticized.

In this way, they have defended that the citizens of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura have "identical rights" to those of the other islands of the Canary Islands and, according to them, "these may be diminished by merely statistical issues". "What it does is put pressure, even more so, on courts that are already overloaded with work", they have stressed.

Restore the situation

The Bar Association of the island will request the General Council of the Judiciary and the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) to restore the activity in the Bis Section of the Provincial Court in the Courts of Arrecife. If this cannot be achieved, it will request that the displacement of the sections already created be guaranteed.

Finally, this entity has stated that it "will do everything that is legally possible" to redirect this situation and for Lanzarote to continue to have this trial room.
