Somos Lanzarote has shown its "deep rejection" of the aggression suffered by the president of Las Kellys, Myriam Barros, at the doors of the Mirador de Lobos hotel, in Corralejo, during a concentration in which they were claiming the rights of the cleaning ladies.
The organization has condemned this "intolerable aggression and attempt to silence one of the labor groups most punished by the drift of the tourism industry in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands, which keeps hotels full while increasing the precariousness of employment and increasing unemployment and poverty on the island."
From Somos Lanzarote they have recognized "the valuable and courageous role of the Las Kellys Lanzarote group, forced to demonstrate before the progressive loss of labor rights and the climate of defenselessness that has been occurring since the last legislature of the PSOE, going through the absolute majority of the Partido Popular until the current government of Rajoy, marked by a cut in freedoms and civil rights with the consequent criminalization and repression of social protest through norms such as the Gag Law."
Criticizes the "passive attitude" of the Cabildo's government group
Likewise, the party denounces "the passive attitude of the island's government group, CC-PSOE-PIL, in the face of the problem of labor exploitation that affects thousands of Lanzarote residents and that has spread throughout much of the tourism sector, generating painful situations for workers and their environments, threatening the social and economic sustainability of the island."
From the transforming organization they remember that the government group of the Cabildo rejected a proposal presented by Somos Lanzarote for the creation of an "Island Table for labor exploitation formed by the different social actors involved and aimed at promoting compliance with quality and safety parameters at work, pointing out the breaches that are occurring, working on quality and health campaigns for employment, while promoting social dialogue and addressing the demands of those who are suffering this scourge."
"It is evident that CC-PSOE-PIL live oblivious to the critical situation experienced by workers in the tourism sector, with increasingly weakened positions against companies, seeing their contracts and salaries become precarious and their ability to defend them, while historical records of occupation and profits are being broken," conclude from Somos Lanzarote.
