"Between seven and eight people" who were serving prison sentences in the Tahíche penitentiary for crimes related to road safety have been released after taking advantage of the new reform of the Penal Code that came into force on December 23. This was stated by the prosecutor assigned to the Environment and Urban Planning section of Las Palmas, Ignacio Stampa, based on data provided by the Criminal Courts of Arrecife.
Ignacio Stampa made these statements during the presentation of the Conference on the Reform of the Penal Code L.O 5/2010, which will be held in Arrecife on January 19, 20 and 21 and which he himself will direct. In his speech, he stated that the new reform of the Penal Code allows that in some cases, the convicted person "can choose whether to go to prison" or, on the contrary, "pay a fine or perform work for the benefit of the community".
This explains why as of December 23, when the new reform of the Penal Code came into force, between 7 and 8 people who were serving prison sentences in Tahíche have been released after opting for another sentence. And in all cases, they were convicted of crimes against road safety. However, Stampa pointed out, "one of them has chosen to stay in prison".
