The president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, gave this Tuesday a "yes", but "with conditions", to the representatives of the associations that are demanding the regularization of vacation homes in the Canary Islands. According to San Ginés, said regularization would have to be "subject to quality and growth controls".
According to the promoters of this initiative, "the Canary Islands is the Autonomous Community of Spain with the highest number of vacation rentals, which represents 10 percent of the total number of tourists who come to the archipelago, around 1,300,000 tourists in 2013". In addition, they maintain that this generates "revenues of around 1,000 million euros per year and directly and indirectly contributes more than 34 percent of tourist employment and more than 33 percent to the Canarian tourist GDP".
These and other data were transferred this Tuesday to San Ginés by the president of the Canarian Vacation Rental Association (ASCAV), José Luis Delgado, the lawyer of this association, Javier Valiente, and the president of the Association of Businessmen and Merchants of Playa Blanca (ASEMCOM), Doris Borrego. During the meeting, they gave the president of the Cbildo the documentation on this initiative, which asks the Government of the Canary Islands to regularize the vacation home market in the Canary Islands, as other autonomous communities such as Catalonia or Andalusia have already done.
For his part, Pedro San Ginés expressed his "agreement" with the regularization of said offer, "which effectively exists on the island and which welcomes a market segment that is interesting due to the type of tourism practiced by its users, especially because it has a significant impact on the spending rates at the destination, as this type of tourism is the antithesis of the so-called all-inclusive". However, the president of the Cabildo stressed that "it would be necessary to measure as precisely as possible what the minimum quality standards, the types of land and even the establishment of limits on the number of beds offered under this modality would be".
