The San Bartolomé Town Council has implemented the waste collection and management service with the placement of 15 used domestic vegetable oil collection containers in different parts of the municipality. Previously, a bidding process was carried out in which the company "Poma" (Explotaciones y eventos S.L.) was awarded the service. It is a manager authorized by the Vice-Ministry of Environment of the Government of the Canary Islands, which will offer the service for two years, extendable to another two, having to take care of the collection, transport, storage and recovery of these wastes in accordance with the applicable legislation. It has also installed on public roads the containers needed to provide the service, do the cleaning, maintenance and replacement of containers.
The councilor responsible for the area, Alexis Tejera, explained that residents will only have to "store used vegetable oil in homes in a plastic container, when it is full, close the lid tightly, clean the outside of the container and take it to the orange containers." Subsequently, the company awarded the service will be responsible for the transfer and treatment to proceed with recycling.
According to the mayor, the aim is "to reduce the amount of domestic oil that is poured through sinks or toilets, intending to facilitate the system of separate collection of used oils in order to protect the environment, thus avoiding discharge into the public sanitation network."
