The Government of the Canary Islands expects the works of the underpass in Playa Honda  to begin in early summer. The Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands has awarded the company Señalizaciones Villar S.A., the works for the construction of the new underpass in Playa Honda, specifically on the LZ-2. The Area directed by Sebastián Franquis, has conferred the works with an economic endowment of 3,813,768 million euros.

The objective of this initiative is to "improve the connectivity" of the Lanzarote town of Playa Honda, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, with the industrial and commercial area that is on the other side of the highway, according to the institution in a press release.

The construction of this new underpass in Playa Honda has been projected to relieve the current underground link under the LZ-2 by creating a new one in parallel. This action has been promoted by the Cabildo de Lanzarote and assumed by the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands as it is the owner of the road of regional interest LZ-2.

The work, which will last approximately 6 months, contemplates the creation of a transversal axis under the LZ-2 to serve as communication between Playa Honda and the industrial and commercial area located on the other side of the highway. It is about creating another underground passage parallel to the current one, but in this case with a design that facilitates both pedestrian and vehicular traffic, favoring pedestrian and cyclist communication.

With this action, Public Works will try to free the current roundabouts accessing Playa Honda from a minimum of 9,000 vehicles per day, a traffic density that generates retentions at specific times that also affect the LZ-2.

In addition, with the design of the new underpass, pedestrian circulation is encouraged, through this new axis, from Avenida del Mayor to the commercial area, regenerating spaces that until now "are collapsed with vehicles and that form a physical and visual barrier for the pedestrian", according to the Ministry.

Likewise, the Government of the Canary Islands affirms that this passage will be provided with the "sufficient amplitude for the coexistence between pedestrian, cyclist and driver", implementing a pedestrian sidewalk of 5.50 meters, a segregated bike lane of 3.50 meters, a green strip of 1.90 meters, and a traffic lane of 5.50 meters.

With this action, bus stops for interurban lines will be executed on the LZ-2 road, above the underpass, with the aim of eliminating traffic in this link. These stops will be communicated with the underpass through outdoor itineraries.
