Podemos gets the Cabildo to commit to closing unauthorized roads to vehicles in El Jable

"Off-road vehicle routes are degrading dunes, destroying nests of protected birds and destroying the landscape of the area," the formation points out, which presented an initiative to the plenary session of the institution

The LEP-Sí Podemos group in the Lanzarote Cabildo presented the 'Pact for El Jable' initiative to the plenary session of the institution, which aims to end the circulation of vehicles outside authorized tracks, protect the ethnographic values of the area and improve information on the flora and fauna of the area.

"The Natura 2000 Network classifies it as a Special Protection Area for Birds due to the presence of protected species such as the Canary houbara or the Saharan runner, so the circulation of two- or four-wheeled motor vehicles outside authorized roads is already irregular," the formation explains, which states that "the problem is aggravated by the practical absence of environmental surveillance on the island, which only has two environmental agents for its 846 square kilometers."

The motion, which was approved unanimously, also proposes the creation of an inter-administrative table to obtain the commitment of the town councils through which
the Jable runs in the involvement of the educational community in awareness-raising efforts.

For the purple formation, the sands of El Jable “build a unique ecosystem that shelters numerous birds, shelters rain-fed crops and creates a shocking landscape that urgently needs protection”. "Already in 1766, the writer Viera y Clavijo described the 'Río de Jable' in his Dictionary of Natural History and the PIOT of 1991 cataloged it as an area of special landscape, agricultural and ecological interest," they highlight from the party.

Councilor Jorge Peñas, who defended the initiative before the island plenary session, wanted to remember that the formation has been “insisting throughout the legislature on the need to increase the number of environmental agents.”

"Faced with the passivity of the Cabildo in this matter," Podemos Lanzarote points out that it has chosen to present an initiative that studies and maps the roads that cross the area and closes all those that are not absolutely essential for access to farmland and explicitly informs of the prohibition of circulating outside of them. “We wanted to appeal to the Cabildo's powers, such as the management of natural spaces, so that there is no excuse”, the councilor insisted.
