The mayor of the Arrecife City Council, Astrid Pérez, has asked for the support of all political groups to urge the Government of the Canary Islands and specifically the Ministry of Public Works, led by Sebastián Franquis, to "fulfill its promise with the rehabilitation of the homes in the Titerroy neighborhood."
“Even if I have to go on a hunger strike, the residents of the neighborhood deserve the lies to stop and the problem that prevents them from accessing their homes to be resolved,” says the mayor.
It should be remembered that last September 2021, the Minister of Public Works, Transportation and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, Sebastián Franquis, and the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, met with the residents evicted from their homes in Titerroy.
After the meeting, the Cabildo of Lanzarote announced the commitment by the Ministry to find a solution to the problem that residents have been facing for a decade.
The mayor points out that "the reality is very different, and as of today the residents continue to be evicted and the works have not started." "The Arrecife City Council has tried to solve the situation, despite the fact that it is not a direct competence of the Council, and has requested up to three times a political-technical meeting with the Government of the Canary Islands to clarify the situation," says Pérez.
From the Consistory they affirm that these three requests "were made on August 18, September 6 and September 19 of this year, and for the moment the Arrecife City Council has not obtained a response." “From the City Council we have always lent a hand and wanted to work together with public institutions to provide a solution to this drama, and we will continue to do so, even if we do not get a response from the other party,” says Astrid Pérez.
“We cannot allow a tragedy like the one that occurred 13 years ago to happen again, and in memory of Juan Luis García, who lost his life after the roof of his house collapsed, these residents deserve a solution,” adds the mayor, who also urges the Government of the Canary Islands to “stop with the lies.”
The Government Group will submit, in the ordinary Plenary Session this Friday, September 30, in order to seek consensus among the political forces represented in the Consistory, an urgent motion proposing the creation of a working commission, in which all political groups participate, to "urge the Government of the Canary Islands to fulfill the promise it made to the residents of the Titerroy neighborhood."
