The visit of the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, to the Cabildo of Lanzarote lasted nearly two hours, where he met with the head of the regional Executive, Ángel Víctor Torres. Sánchez was received by the president of the Island Corporation, María Dolores Corujo, who presented him with several gifts, including a framed print by the Lanzarote artist César Manrique.
Although he did not make statements to the media at the end of the meeting, the president did point out that his stay on the island is going "very well." That was his response when he was getting into the car and journalists asked him about his vacation in Lanzarote, which began last Wednesday.
Although the visit was scheduled for 11:15 a.m., Sánchez arrived at the Cabildo about ten minutes earlier than expected, being received at its doors by Ángel Víctor Torres himself, as well as by the Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function, Carolina Darias, the Secretary of State for Public Function, Francisco Hernández Spínola, the Government Delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, and the President of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo.
After entering the institution, Sánchez greeted the councilors of the Cabildo present and then went to the Presidency, where the meeting took place to address the needs and upcoming challenges of the Canary Islands, following the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Finally, Pedro Sánchez left the Cabildo at around 1:00 p.m., again accompanied by the rest of the political leaders. In addition to the media, several citizens were waiting for his departure, to whom, after shouting the president's name, Sánchez gave a wave.
In addition to a painting by César Manrique, the Cabildo presented Pedro Sánchez with a timple, made by a luthier from the municipality of Tías, and a pin of the institution's Golden Crab. For his part, the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, gave the head of the Executive a series of plastic works entitled 'Canarias, more than a gift', where the artist Ruperto Cabrera conveys a renewed vision of the archipelago, linked to eight literary texts by Canarian writers.
Corujo: "It is a pride to have the presence of the president"
According to the Cabildo, the President of the Government highlighted during the meeting the need to advance in coordination and dialogue between the different levels of government, within the framework of a co-governance strategy that the Executive considers essential, both from the point of view of health management and to promote the economic and social reconstruction of the country. As an example, he cited the renewed impetus to the Conference of Presidents, the highest body of institutional cooperation.
Likewise, the institution emphasizes that Pedro Sánchez wanted to reiterate the government's commitment to the Canary Islands from unity, cooperation and institutional loyalty, counting on the renewed impetus of the European project to address the great transformations facing our country, and address them as authentic opportunities for the future to modernize the economy.
“It is a pride to have the presence of the President of the Government of Spain in our institution as well as that he has chosen the island for his days of rest”, commented the President of the Cabildo. “It is a gift for the island, and as you know, he is not the first President of the Government to choose Lanzarote as a destination for his rest”, she added.
