The councilor of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-bc) in the Teguise City Council, Fernando Jiménez, denounces "the new snub" by the Teguise government group (CC, PP and the former Vox councilor) to the workers of the companies that have contracts with the municipal entity.
This is expressed by the Canarian after "a controversial plenary session today", where the government group led by the mayor Olivia Duque (CC) "has blocked the debate and vote on the motion registered by NC-bc in order for the Teguise City Council to express its support and willingness to protect labor rights of the workers who provide any service to the public entity, whether direct or indirect." A motion, Jiménez indicates, whose reason for being was “to express institutional rejection of the violation of workers' rights and job insecurity.”
“It is regrettable that a motion that seeks to reinforce what is already in labor laws, in the charters of universal rights and in public contracts, is blocked for reasons, we understand, of partisan interest on the part of those who exercise control of the local government for decades,” says Fernando Jiménez, who is beginning to consider other political actions to clarify what he already calls a “boss move by CC and the government group.”
The Canarians "respect the considerations offered by the City Council secretariat, which indicates that it is not the power of the plenary to vote on a reprimand to the contracted companies, although they do not share this interpretation." That is why, they will ask the secretariat for explanations in writing, and will reformulate the motion as many times as necessary "for the good of the workers and for democratic dignity."
On the other hand, NC-bc also expresses its denunciation "of the authoritarian and opaque drift to which this government group is leading the Teguise City Council, reducing the capacity for oversight of the opposition groups." The Canarians state that "it is not only that the initiatives of the groups are constantly questioned, many blocked by filibustering, but that it is intended to deny the plenary its power to vote on the agreements signed by the city council." A decision they understand to be “opaque” and “bossy.”
“Many believe that the Teguise City Council is their farm, that they can do and undo as they please. From NC-bc we will continue to be a thorn in their side, even if the government group doesn't like it,” says Fernando Jiménez.
