Nueva Canarias has received with indignation "Oswaldo Betancort's plan to try to take the cruises from Arrecife, for the benefit of Playa Blanca. “It is an act of economic irresponsibility and contempt for the future of the island's capital,” the party points out, warning that "it will not allow Oswaldo Betancort to ruin Arrecife by moving the cruises to Playa Blanca."
The formation recalls that the city of Arrecife receives the visit of tens of thousands of cruise passengers during the year, which boosts the restoration and commerce of the capital. "These cruise passengers also request taxi services for many of their trips. Anyone who knows the reality of this city knows that, on many occasions, these visitors have saved the operating account of shops and restaurants, becoming the livelihood of many families,” says the deputy mayor of Arrecife, Armando Santana.
"With an operation of this type, transferring the cruise business to Playa Blanca benefits the same people as always and despises the small businesses of Arrecife," adds Santana. "From our city, we are tired of the fact that every time an unscrupulous politician wants to win a handful of votes, they have to sacrifice our municipality," he laments.
Cruises, key to the recovery of the city
Armando Santana points out that "covid-19 has been devastating for the local economy and for our city" and considers that "the reconstruction plan inevitably involves the recovery of the cruise sector." In this sense, the Councilor for Commerce and Tourism of Arrecife asks the CC deputy "for an immediate rectification" and warns that "Nueva Canarias will go to the ultimate consequences to avoid such a magnitude of nonsense."
Finally, Nueva Canarias wants to remind Betancort that "he is a deputy for the entire island and not just for Gladys Acuña, from whom everything indicates that this idea, as old as it is of extreme gravity, has arisen."
