The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the UNESCO Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago Global Geopark and the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers of Lanzarote, have inaugurated this Monday a commemorative exhibition of the 200 years of the last volcanic eruptions recorded on the island.

The exhibition, which can be visited free of charge at the Casa-Museo Monumento al Campesino, offers a tour of the historical testimonies and scientific studies on the volcanic episodes that transformed the island's landscape in 1824.

An exhibition that revives a key episode in the history of Lanzarote

The eruptions of 1824 marked the end of a geological process that defined the morphology of the island and that, although of lesser magnitude than the historical eruptions of Timanfaya (1730-1736), left its mark on Lanzarote. For several months, the inhabitants of the island witnessed the appearance of new eruptive vents in places such as Tingüatón, Tao and Nuevo del Fuego, which modified the territory and were the subject of numerous accounts and chronicles of the time.

The exhibition combines documentary material, historical testimonies and scientific studies, creating a space for dissemination that allows us to understand the impact of these natural phenomena and the resilience of the population of Lanzarote. Through informative panels, audiovisual material and reconstructions of original documents, the exhibition highlights the effort of those who documented these events and the work of the scientific community that continues to study them.

A key research work for scientific dissemination

The Councilor of Geopark Lanzarote, Samuel Martín, stressed the importance of the research and dissemination work behind this exhibition: "This exhibition is the result of a joint effort to rescue, analyze and disseminate a key episode in the geological history of Lanzarote. We especially thank Dr. Carmen Romero Ruiz, whose research work has been fundamental to document and explain these events with scientific rigor. From the Geopark we continue to bet on the dissemination of knowledge and the protection of our volcanic environment," said Martín.

An ideal space to bring the volcanic history of Lanzarote closer

For his part, the Councilor of the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers of Lanzarote, highlighted the relevance of this exhibition for the dissemination of the geological heritage of the island and the role of the space that hosts it.

“This exhibition allows us to travel back in time to better understand the impact of the 1824 eruptions and how the island and its inhabitants have been able to adapt to them. The Casa-Museo Monumento al Campesino, a space that symbolizes the relationship between man and the land, is the ideal place to bring this knowledge closer to the public. From the Centers we remain committed to culture, science, education and the enhancement of our natural and historical heritage,” said the councilor.

A tribute to the witnesses of the past and the scientists of the present

One of the main objectives of the exhibition is to pay tribute both to the witnesses of these eruptions and to the scientists who have studied their impact over the centuries. Through excerpts from chronicles of the time, visitors will be able to learn firsthand how the people of Lanzarote lived through those days of uncertainty and change. In addition, the exhibition offers an updated scientific approach to the island's geology and the importance of these events in the formation of the UNESCO Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago Global Geopark.

For this, we have worked on an accessible and dynamic museography, which combines different formats to facilitate the understanding of the content to audiences of all ages. The exhibition is conceived not only as a space for knowledge, but also as a meeting point for debate and reflection on the island's relationship with its volcanic activity.
