Five officials from the Tahíche penitentiary center were injured, with a hemorrhage in one eye in one case and a broken lip and damaged ribs in others, after a "brutal" attack by an inmate, after a fight that broke out in module 5 of the prison. This has been denounced by the USO-ACAIP, CSI-CSIF, FSP-UGT and CCOO-Servicio a la ciudadanía unions, who have once again questioned the lack of resources with which they carry out their work in prison.
According to the unions' statement, the events began at 5:20 p.m., when a fight broke out. "When the officials arrived to isolate the problem and without prior notice, the inmate D.G.B. began to brutally and excessively kick and punch two officials, causing them multiple traumas and contusions."
When the rest of the staff was notified, the inmate continued to "kick and punch". According to the unions, "the consequences of this brutal aggression were various injuries, such as a nose fracture and hemorrhage in the right eye of one of the officials, a broken lip in another, several damaged ribs and cuts on the body in another of the officials and numerous contusions erosions in the rest".
In addition, despite being in prison, the officials point out that the inmate had "symptoms of being under the influence of drugs", so hours later they decided to take him to the Hospital. At that time, they say, he took the opportunity "to attack another official in the admissions department", so he had to be "reduced" with the help of agents of the Civil Guard who had come to Tahíche to carry out the driving to the Hospital.
In the subsequent search of his belongings, according to prison officials, "a large number of anabolic pills were found, as well as the medication that had been prescribed by the doctor."
The unions point out that "it is not the first time that this inmate has been involved in violent acts, since just three months ago he was involved in a fight with another inmate and despite this he was in module 5, a so-called pre-respect module."
"These events, which could be described as very serious, are in addition to those already denounced lately by the unions and confirm an evident increase in conflict in prisons, caused to a large extent by the shortage of staff, since a single official is in charge of a module whose capacity is 74 inmates," they denounce.
