Leonardo Rodríguez, deputy mayor and councilor for Economy and Finance in Yaiza, did not want to give explanations as to why no CC councilor attended the last plenary session of Yaiza, held on April 6, to approve the concession of a plot of land of about 20,000 square meters in Playa Blanca to the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, for the construction of the future Mediterranean Park.
The absence of the nationalists evidenced the differences between the partners that make up the government group of the Consistory, PIL and CC, and even the mayor Gladys Acuña publicly admitted that she had not received explanations to justify that absence.
"These are internal issues of operation of the City Council that I am not going to name because I was taught that dirty laundry is washed at home, and for now I continue with the education I received at home", Leonardo Rodríguez has stated in this regard.
"I am not going to waste a single minute of time talking about unimportant internal issues, but I will talk about the issues that I consider appropriate for the municipality, such as the fact that there are families unemployed and that there are families who go to social services to ask for food", said the councilor during an interview on the program "Buenos días Lanzarote".
"To talk about political issues or loves or heartbreaks I have a party president who is the one who has to talk about that. I, as a councilor, am only going to talk about the problems of the municipality and what interests the inhabitants of the same", Rodríguez stressed.
And the councilor argues that he does not have time to "talk about politicking" at this time, in which "we are experiencing a situation of economic crisis in which we all have to pitch in". Thus, avoiding talking about the tensions that the pact maintains in the southern municipality, he stressed that in Yaiza there are "1,800 neighbors unemployed and 300 workers in the southern Consistory who as of the 13th have not been paid", so he says that those issues that do not revolve around the crisis do not worry him or will ever occupy him.
Papagayo Camping and garbage collection in Yaiza
The deputy mayor of Yaiza has also spoken about the other two issues that have placed the Yaiza City Council in the spotlight in recent weeks, the opening of the Los Ajaches campsite and the strikes by the company contracted for garbage collection.
Regarding the Papagayo campsite, Rodríguez has stated that he does not know "what the low occupancy is due to" that has finally been registered this Easter. In his opinion, the fundamental thing is that "in the end the campsite could be opened and it has not cost a cent of the money from the taxes of the residents of Yaiza".
On the other hand, in reference to the strike called by the workers of the company contracted to carry out the garbage collection, due to the delay in the payment of wages, the Councilor for Finance has reiterated that "the City Council has never had a problem with the garbage company, in fact, it has never been as up to date as it is now with payments, and it has never failed to comply with the company".
Hence, Rodríguez considers that "the company has a problem with the workers, not with the City Council, which has complied with the company". In addition, he stressed that "the strike will not be a reason for the Consistory to run more or less to make payments" and recalled that the basic service has been guaranteed.
On the possibility that the Consistory terminates the contract with the company, given the repeated calls for strikes by the workers, Leonardo Rodríguez has stated that the measures to be taken in this regard "are internal issues, although it is true that the legal services and the secretariat are studying it and everything that can be done will be done as quickly as possible, always respecting the legal guarantees of all parties; workers, company and City Council".
