The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has demanded that Canal Gestión Lanzarote, the company in charge of maintaining the sanitation and water distribution networks in Lanzarote, replace the entire underground pipe on Tajaraste street. This sanitation network, in the Argana Alta neighborhood, registered its fifth break on Friday night, in less than two months.

For the mayor, "it is incomprehensible that a sanitation pipe registers so many consecutive breaks, causing potholes in the public road, and, in addition, as was observed last night, spills of sewage in the nearby areas."

Yonathan de León, who had demanded on several occasions that Canal Gestión provide an external audit on the situation of the network, reflecting the investments in maintenance, and its situation and needs, will require the Water Consortium of Lanzarote, a public entity that ceded to this company the tasks of maintenance and distribution of the drinking water network as well as that destined for sanitation, to oversee the urgent replacement of this network before Canal Gestión. The continuous breaks could be a reflection of its poor condition.

From the Arrecife City Council, it is also requested that Canal Gestión Lanzarote establish a protocol to notify citizens when breakdowns of this nature occur, which affect traffic and generate discomfort among the affected residents. The mayor has detailed that in addition to this new breakdown of the sewage network in Argana Alta, this same week a street had to be opened in Altvista to repair another breakdown in the sanitation network in that area. Canal Gestión did not inform the residents of these incidents or warn of the cuts that were necessary to open the ditch.

The mayor requested an external audit from Canal Gestión about the network

The Arrecife City Council demanded that Canal Gestión Lanzarote, on October 18, provide an external audit on the situation of the sanitation network in the capital of Lanzarote, where the maintenance work, breakdowns and damages, and the investments made, if any, in that maintenance, which by law this company has attributed after the direct transfer from the Water Consortium of Lanzarote, are specified.

The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, and direct head of the Department of Public Works, has recalled that Canal Gestión charges along with the household water bill, a "sanitation fee", which is intended to cover the sanitation network in all the nuclei of Lanzarote, where it exists.

The entire capital of Lanzarote has a sanitation network, and the competencies in its repair and maintenance correspond to Canal Gestión, due to the transfer made from the Water Consortium of Lanzarote. Yonathan de León reiterated in the recent Extraordinary Assembly of the Water Consortium, for Canal Gestión, "with celerity, to provide this audit that allows us to know the alleged maintenance work carried out by Canal Gestión since it assumed these full competencies in the entire sewage network in the municipality".

From the Arrecife City Council, they "share the anger of the citizens who are seeing before their eyes that in addition to the breakdowns of the water supply networks on the island, causing continuous water cuts in the supply to homes and agricultural farms, now there are damages and continuous breakdowns in the subsoil of the capital that are affecting, in addition, the sewage network". "The serious breakdowns generate landslides or holes in the public road, affecting the mobility of vehicles and harming citizens, where the exclusive responsibility for that network lies with Canal Gestión Lanzarote," he adds.

Yonathan de León urges, "with urgency, the replacement of the entire pipe that runs along Calle Tajaraste, and requests that the company Canal Gestión intensify the cleaning, removal and washing of the areas covered with sewage during the night of this Friday, generating discomfort among the citizens. The high temperatures recorded on this day generate more inconveniences to the residents of the area, where there is also an Infant and Primary school".
