This Saturday, the first stone was laid for the mental health center of Lanzarote, located in the town of Tahíche (Teguise). The project has a budget of 2,350,000 euros, of which 1,900,000 will be for the building.
The psychiatrist Julio Santiago recalled that ten years ago the authorities recognized the need and urgency of this work, which had not started until now. He pointed out that there will be thirty-five places for long-term residents and another fifteen for patients who will use it as a day center.
The central government contributes 1,200,00 euros through an agreement with the Government of the Canary Islands, which in turn contributes 450,000 euros, while the Cabildo of Lanzarote contributes 700,000 euros and cedes the plot.
The event was attended by the mayor of Teguise, Juan Pedro Hernández, the island director of the General State Administration, Carmelo García Déniz, the councilor of social services of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Marci Acuña, as well as the councilor of the Government of the Canary Islands, Inés Rojas, the president of the Cabildo Pedro San Ginés and the regional president, Paulino Rivero, among others.
EL CRIBO
All those who intervened highlighted the important work carried out on the Island by the association for the defense of the psychiatric patient El Cribo. Paulino Rivero stressed that the residence will improve the quality of life of patients and provide relief to families who care for them at this time.
Now on the Island there are no places for long-stay patients. There are only twelve in the José Molina Hospital for sporadic admissions and five places in centers in Gran Canaria. The waiting list of the Island at this time corresponds to the places that are going to be created.
