The Lanzarote Member of Parliament of the Canarian Nationalist Group, Jesús Machín Tavío, has called for a "fair regulation" for the rental of motorhomes and camper vans, one of the sectors whose demand he assures has increased "suddenly" after the Covid 19 pandemic.
“In this situation that we have had to live through, we have been looking for alternatives that would allow us to continue enjoying our trips and vacations with all the health and safety guarantees, and in this line many people have opted for motorhome and camper van tourism”, Machín highlighted in Parliament.
However, the nationalist deputy regrets that this new form of enjoyment "does not have a regulation according to its characteristics so that the activity can be carried out legally", and is suffering the application "of the same requirements established in the Canary Islands Transport Law for car rental companies".
“The requirements of the Canary Islands Transport Law are unaffordable. We have before us a new reality that must be faced and regulated, because there are many people who earn a living through the rental of these vehicles”, he pointed out.
Machín highlights that, among the requirements that are imposed to be able to register in the autonomous registry, "the owner of the activity is obliged to have twenty motorhomes in his name, with an age of one year from the first registration, and contemplating, in addition, seven years of permanence for the fleet".
“It is incomprehensible. It is clear that no one has stopped to think that having a motorhome or camperizing a vehicle with a minimum of quality, involves an investment of almost 800,000 euros to be able to register in the autonomous registry, pay taxes and be up to date with everything concerning the activity", says Machín.
Likewise, he insists that “there is no activity in our society that is subject to so many demands, so many requirements and to which the Administration puts so many obstacles”.
For the deputy, it is "about regulating and making it more flexible", since he points out that “there are many people for whom their only source of income is the rental of these vehicles”.
