Carlos Sáenz returned to sit this Thursday in the Plenary of the Arrecife City Council, after rejoining his position as auditor on August 8. The official had been away from this position for more than a year, after his arrest in the Montecarlo case, in which he is accused of alleged crimes of embezzlement of public funds, bribery, money laundering, prevarication and falsification of a public document.

After his arrest, the Court decreed provisional prison for him. However, after spending ten months in prison, this measure was lifted and he was released pending trial. Upon leaving Tahíche, on March 26, Carlos Sáenz requested to recover his position, but immediately began to present medical leaves that he renewed weekly, so he remained away from the City Council.

However, on August 8, just the day after the new auditor that the City Council had hired to replace him, Martina Taaroa Manteiga, attended her first Plenary, Carlos Sáenz returned to the City Council to recover his position.

The nexus of the investigation

Sáenz is one of the main defendants in the "Montecarlo" case, where he is being investigated not only for his management in Arrecife, but also as auditor of the City Councils of San Bartolomé and La Oliva (Fuerteventura), where he no longer holds this position.

Both he and the businessman José Vicente Montesinos are the common links that united three municipalities in this same investigation.

In some pieces, names such as those of Cándido Reguera are also repeated, charged in the case both for his time as mayor of Arrecife, and for his period at the head of the Department of Finance in San Bartolomé.
