The wine from the Bermejo wineries of the Lanzarote Designation of Origin has been awarded a gold medal in the official Agrocanarias 2010 wine competition, the final phase of which was held in Playa Blanca. For its part, Teleguía, from Bodegas Llanovid of the La Palma Designation of Origin, took the grand gold medal in this championship of the best sweet malvasias from the Canary Islands, as determined by a dozen renowned tasters.
For its part, Reymar wineries of the Lanzarote Designation of Origin received two awards for its malvasia liqueur wine and for its muscatel in the sweet category. Of the four medals awarded in this final phase of the competition, three went to wines from Lanzarote and one to La Palma.
Fourteen wines from Lanzarote (10), Tenerife (3) and La Palma (1) were competing in this third and final day of the competition, which will culminate at the end of this month with the designation of the Best Wine of the Canary Islands and Best Image and Presentation.
The director of the Canary Islands Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA), Guillermo Díaz Guerra, highlighted the great quality of the Canary Islands wines and in particular the wine production of Lanzarote, which together with the island of La Palma, constitutes the cradle of volcanic malvasia, "a variety with its own name that has placed the Canary Islands in the history books".
"The mineralization of our soils and the high number of hours of sunshine give rise to wines of excellent quality that place us among the most awarded in prestigious competitions around the world," he stressed.
Three wines from the island are awarded
To promote the dissemination of the winners of the competition, Agrocanarias 2010 divided its program into three phases, which are completed with this last day dedicated to sweet malvasias and with the designation at the end of June of the award for Best Image and Presentation and Best Wine of the Canary Islands, awards to which the 135 wines participating in this edition are eligible. The last of these recognitions will be awarded to the wine most valued by prestigious tasters in the three tasting phases of the competition.
A hundred island wines participated in the second day of the competition, in which ten wines from the island of Tenerife were awarded, distributed among its five Designations of Origin, three from Lanzarote and one from La Palma. The Grand Gold Medals, awards granted by this contest to the highest scoring wines, went to the Testamento Malvasía Barrica from the Cumbres de Abona winery belonging to the Abona Designation of Origin, and to Bronce, from the DO Tacoronte-Acentejo, a wine that also received the distinction of Best Organic Wine.
First phase
In the first phase of Agrocanarias 2010, dedicated exclusively to the production of carbonic maceration, a total of eleven wines from El Hierro, Lanzarote, La Palma and Tenerife competed, among which Marba, from the DO Tacoronte-Acentejo, was the winner.
The contest, which has been held since 2000, has become an effective tool for the promotion of Canary Islands wines and an unmissable event for experts in the sector who find in this event the best opportunity to analyze and recognize the quality of wine production in the Archipelago.
