The mayor of Arrecife, who has been in the area this week, celebrates that the Port Authority of Las Palmas is executing the works for the removal of what is known among fishermen as the "Wall of Shame." A concrete enclosure, unsightly, and which was built decades ago in the port area of Arrecife for its operational needs.
After Yonathan de León was proclaimed mayor of Arrecife in July 2023, one of his first demands to the Port Authority of Las Palmas was the replacement of this perimeter concrete wall with another structure with less visual impact.
The mayor of the capital of Lanzarote, the only public representative of the island on the Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, asked the president of this state entity, Beatriz Calzada, to "study a new design for the perimeter closure of Puerto de Naos that would not generate so much visual impact, and allow passersby to contemplate and enjoy the views of this maritime enclave closely linked to the coastal history of Arrecife."
In recent months, the Port Authority of Las Palmas has tendered the works, and the new installation of this more integrated fence, which reduces the visual impact, is already underway. Legislation requires the Ports of the State, as in the case of Arrecife, to have security closures in their port area.
Removal of the concrete wall and recovery of the space for a large green lung
During this 2025, once the installation of the new perimeter closure, created in metal mesh that allows the visualization of the fishing area of Naos, is completed, the concrete walls will be removed and that area will be integrated as a public and green space for Arrecife where a large park of more than 5000 square meters will be built. For the transfer of this land, an agreement for the transfer of the land from the Port Authority of Las Palmas (APLP) is already in force.
Drafting of the park project and integration of the old Porto Naos dock
At the request of the mayor of the city, the original dock of 'Porto Naos' will be integrated into the new urban park that will be built in this neuralgic area of Arrecife, which will be part of the five eco-boulevards that the City Council of Arrecife is planning in the new urban image of the capital of Lanzarote.
Yonathan de León has announced that "the Department of Public Works of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, led by Councilor Jacobo Medina, is finalizing the documents to tender the drafting of the project for this large park, which will be linked to the Vía Medular."
The mayor has specified that several of the five eco-boulevards planned by the Department of Public Works of the City Council will be connected to the Vía Medular to create green promenades. This summer, the City Council of Arrecife will tender the first of these five eco-boulevards, which will connect the Vía Medular with the Cuatro Esquinas, through Pérez Galdós Street. From this new green lung in Puerto de Naos to the "door" of the Pérez Galdós eco-boulevard, between the neighborhoods of Valterra and Los Alonso, it is less than a 7-minute walk.
Last week, Yonathan de León, and the vice president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Manuel Domínguez, presented in the Cuatro Esquinas the first of these eco-boulevards, which will be tendered this summer, with an investment of 3.2 million euros. The Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Commerce, co-finances this important work with 2 million euros, which also includes relaunching the Arrecife Open Commercial Zone.
