The spokesperson for the Canarian Coalition in the Congress of Deputies, Ana Oramas, demanded this Wednesday that José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero prevent the islands from returning to the "Iberian monopoly" in the face of the loss of air connections with the peninsula. Oramas, who cited cases such as Air Madrid, Spanair, and Air Futura, reminded the President that "while the AVE extends to the four cardinal points, our air lanes are losing lines and frequencies."
The nationalist spokesperson emphasized that the economic crisis is being experienced more acutely in the Canary Islands, so she insisted that the islands cannot return to the model of air frequencies "from the last century." Oramas took advantage of the President of the Government's appearance in Congress to remind him that the development of the islands depends on avoiding the "bottleneck" that air transport represents. Therefore, she demanded more resources from Zapatero for airport infrastructure and for the trains in the capitals.
Oramas commented to the President that the "real problem is not how to make it to the end of the month, but how to start the month" and insisted that the islands are experiencing the economic crisis to a greater extent than the peninsular territory, recalling that the Canary Islands are "moving away from the development and welfare parameters of the European Union and Spain," and cited as an example the increase in unemployment in the islands by 32 percent in the last twelve months.
The spokesperson for the Canarian Coalition called for a "specific and complete financial plan" for the islands to renovate the obsolete tourist accommodation plant and thus mitigate the "number of unemployed in the construction sector," while offering Zapatero a hand to govern "when the winds are not favorable."
