“Alexis Tejera is lying because there are technical alternatives to maintain a bike lane on the avenue"

The councilors of the Popular Party in the City Council of San Bartolomé, Lorenzo Reyes and Sergio Tejera, reiterate their rejection of the elimination of the bike lane along Playa Honda avenue and defend the right of residents to decide which option they prefer among those that are technically viable.

“What cannot be is that the mayor lied to everyone because the option of keeping the bikes on the avenue really existed", indicates the deputy spokesperson for the PP in San Bartolomé, Sergio Tejera. “The correct thing would have been to inform the residents of all the alternatives by convening a citizen participation procedure that would serve to resolve the option most accepted by the citizens and avoid the growing discomfort in the face of the municipal decision to direct all bicycle mobility through the cycle streets in the interior of Playa Honda”, he adds.

The councilors of the Popular Party understand that "this option, which would also be one-way, increases the insecurity of cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles because, although in specific areas, everyone will coexist on the same road." In addition, they point out that "many of the future cycle streets are ordinary roads, in which there is only one lane of traffic and with parking on each side, so the accumulation of signage will end up creating more confusion for both drivers and cyclists, which could turn the town into chaos."

“What we fear is that in the end, circulation through the cycle streets may be more dangerous and more complex to control than the habilitation of a bike lane on the avenue. After all, it is an area of recreation and coexistence that, well regulated, does not have to represent any problem”, says Sergio Tejera, who trusts that "the discomfort of the residents can persuade the municipal government to continue with this project."
