The councilors of the Popular Party in the City Council of San Bartolomé, Lorenzo Reyes and Sergio Tejera, have expressed their opposition to the decision of the government of Alexis Tejera to close the Playa Honda Maritime Avenue to cyclist traffic and establish cycle streets as an alternative through the interior of the town.
For the representatives of the Popular Party in the consistory, "the prohibition of bicycles circulating on the avenue is a whim of the mayor insofar as the coexistence of pedestrians and cyclists is perfectly compatible in this space if the areas are conveniently delimited."
As explained by the deputy spokesperson in the consistory, Sergio Tejera, “what is nonsense is resorting to prohibitions when what should be done is precisely regulate the use of this leisure space so that all residents can enjoy it, whether walking, playing sports or simply having a coffee.”
The PP councilors are clear that “the creation of cycle streets cannot be the alternative to the closure of the avenue, because it is one thing to enable spaces for bicycles in the streets of Playa Honda and another is to close the avenue completely and break the link that exists with Arrecife, Tías, and in the near future Teguise, in what will be the longest bike lane in Europe.”
The popular representatives ask the municipal government to rectify its decision to close the avenue to bicycle traffic and reiterate the need for the Playa Honda Mobility Plan to be approved in plenary session as soon as possible, "a tool that sustainably plans the town, taking special care with pedestrians and bicycles." ”We are talking about planning, making all uses compatible and doing so by prioritizing safety; something that we believe the government group's initiative puts at risk, as do the parking spaces that will be the first thing affected by the mayor's measure,” concludes Sergio Tejera.
