Forty-nine flights scheduled to arrive or depart from Lanzarote to Europe have been canceled due to the smoke cloud caused by the eruption of a volcano in Iceland. Since 2:30 p.m., the airspace has been closed in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden, according to Aena.
Thursday is the day with the most traffic at the Guacimeta airport. Of the 86 scheduled operations, 49 have been canceled (22 arrivals and 27 departures). Only six planes have departed early in the morning to the aforementioned destinations. The two flights to Ireland have operated without problems.
The measure has affected about 4,000 passengers who have been forced to stay in Lanzarote. The airlines are relocating them to their hotels, although many of them have not even left the hotel. Many others are at the airport waiting to return to their accommodation. Most of the cancellations affect flights to the United Kingdom.
