The spokesperson for Izquierda Unida in Lanzarote, Francisco Martínez, has announced that on Thursday night he "suspended the hunger strike he was holding in solidarity with Aminatou Haidar." According to Martínez, he has adopted the decision to abandon the strike "at the request of the Saharawi activist."
The IU representative has been camping in front of the Government Delegation for the last four days in protest of "the situation caused by the Governments of Spain and Morocco." During these days, he says that he has received "solidarity visits from numerous people, including the spokespersons of the platform and the general coordinator of Izquierda Unida, Cayo Lara, and the MEP Willy Meyer."
This Thursday afternoon, Francisco Martínez visited Aminatou Haidar at the Lanzarote airport, and he states that the activist showed him "her gratitude" and asked him to "please, stop the strike, because the health and well-being of those who support her is very important to her."
After the meeting, the spokesperson for IU in Lanzarote explains that he decided to "end the hunger strike" and took "his first food after four days, in the company of the members of the Aminetu Haidar support Platform."
