The scheduled performances of the plays "The Guy in the Tomb Next Door", starring Maribel Verdú and Antonio Molero, and "The Blackout", by actor Gabino Diego, have been canceled "for reasons completely beyond the control of the Lanzarote Council and the Department of Education and Culture", according to a statement from the institution. Both performances were to be staged at the Teatro Insular in Arrecife.

The Department of Culture has expressed its regret over this fact and wanted to make clear "its disappointment at these cancellations", which they have assured are "exclusively attributable to the production company organizing these events, La Lluvia Azul S.L.".

The play that was to bring Maribel Verdú and Antonio Molero to the island had two scheduled performances, on November 16 and 17. On the other hand, the one starring Gabino Diego, also with two performances on the island, was scheduled for December 7 and 8.

Juan Diego, this Thursday at the Teatro Insular

Juan Diego will perform this Thursday night at 9:00 p.m. at the Teatro Insular. The actor has presented at the Cabildo, together with the councilor Emma Cabrera, the play "The Mother Tongue", by Juan José Millás, which he will perform on stage.

Juan Diego has dissected in a press conference the nature of "The Mother Tongue", its meaning and its background. In this sense, he has lamented "all the lexical paraphernalia of the crisis, which floods us every morning". In addition, he has advocated for "the necessary vindication of recovering the language of the lullaby, of the breast that nursed us as children, which is the same as the last breath when we die".

A "mother tongue that is more related to the act of communicating, of transmitting the basic sense of life, than to the language in which these messages are expressed". "Because all mothers give birth, sing lullabies to their children while breastfeeding them and tell them stories in the language of the place. A mother tongue that can be Spanish, Catalan, Basque, English... Or a Spanish with peculiar characteristics such as Andalusian or Canarian", Juan Diego explained.

He has also referred to his character in this play, who is "the most person" of all the "characters he has played". "He is the one I would most like to be like. The closest, most sincere, the one that most people become fond of. In fact, this play, and I have to thank Juan José Millás for that, is like a parenthesis within my professional agenda. Like a breath of fresh air that I am fully enjoying. With 'The Mother Tongue' I am living the best tour of my life", he assured.

The councilor has stated that it is a "great satisfaction" and an "honor" to be able to have in Lanzarote "an actor of his stature and his level". "We also appreciate his willingness to attend this media presentation", the councilor said, referring to the press conference that Juan Diego gave this Thursday.

Tickets can be purchased at the box office before the show and cost 15 euros.
