The municipality of Yaiza has three residents over a century old, but Julia Rodríguez Martín, a resident of the town of La Hoya, is the oldest of the centenarian grandmothers. This Sunday she turned 103 years old surrounded by family, friends and representatives of the Yaiza City Council.
Although she does not remember some passages of her life exactly, she proudly mentions her work in the Janubio Salt Flats and in the countryside. Born in Femés, Julia has 3 children, 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. In the midst of the love and admiration of her family, the grandmother strongly blew out the candles on the cake and received flowers from councilors Óscar Noda, Roque Herrera and Jonatan Lemes.
At the meeting, anecdotes and experiences surrounding the honoree were recalled, looking back through photos of her life. Ángela Paola, Julia's first great-great-granddaughter, keeps the photos she takes with her grandmother year after year as a treasure. She is currently 12 years old and excitedly shows the snapshots from the times when Julia carried her in her arms when she was a baby.
The grandmother has a good physical appearance and, despite the limitations of her age, watches TV, receives visitors and enjoys the company of her loved ones. For health reasons, she now says that she eats "more softly", perhaps because she misses her old diet, based on grain stew, gofio, fish and cheese.
