Francisco Martínez, island coordinator of Izquierda Unida Canaria in Lanzarote has started an indefinite hunger strike before the Insular Directorate of the General State Administration in solidarity with the Saharawi activist Aminatou Haidar. It is not the first time that Martínez has undertaken actions like this since, together with Luis Rego and Isabel Márquez, he already carried out a 24-hour hunger strike days ago.

According to Martínez, "Aminatou knows perfectly well what she wants, which is to return to her home, with her children, enter El Aaiún without problems and return to her land, from which she was expelled by Morocco, which has illegally occupied Western Sahara since 1975".

In this sense, IUC demands from the socialist Government "less complicity with the Government of Morocco and the defense of Human Rights, which are not being respected in the occupied Sahara".

Regarding the concerns of the Consulate of Morocco in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Embassy in Madrid, due to the lack of sympathy in the Canary Islands, the coordinator of IUC in Lanzarote assures that "the expansionist policy of the monarchy of Morocco is what has caused a strong rejection and only the independence of El Sahara can change the negative feelings towards the authorities of Morocco".

IUC asks the Government and the King of Morocco to "take good note of this and not look for new subterfuges, hiring communication and marketing agencies to wash their image. Only respect for the rights of the Saharawi people can change that negative image. We defend Aminatou's will to return to her home, without problems, and we hold the governments of Morocco and Spain responsible for what may happen to her, for not allowing it".
