Pedro Lara, head of the Radiotherapy Oncology Service in Negrín and advisory president of the Spanish Society of Clinical Oncology, showed his support in Lanzarote for the start-up of the radiotherapy service at the José Molina Orosa hospital. It was during the course of a conference that took place last Thursday at the Sociedad Democracia. Lara gave the conference "Radiotherapy in Lanzarote" at the request of the Association of Oncohematological Families of Lanzarote AFOL.
Dr. Lara explained, using slides, the latest technological advances available to the Canary Islands Health Service, placing it at the head of the best in Spain. Pedro Lara was very positive about the implementation of establishing the so-called "Satellite Centers" in both Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, whose coordinating center would continue to be at the Negrín hospital in Gran Canaria. From this hospital, a study would be carried out on each patient with their corresponding treatment, which could be carried out daily through the accelerator in Lanzarote, thus avoiding the patient's transfer to Gran Canaria. Dr. Pedro Lara advocated throughout the talk for the implementation of the radiotherapy service with accelerator in Lanzarote. Lara Jiménez predicted that after all the bureaucratic procedures, the service could be up and running by the end of 2020.
Once his presentation was finished, he invited the public that filled the hall of the Democracy society to participate and raise some doubts that they had pending, to which the very participatory public raised a series of questions, all related to the situation in which the oncohematological patients of Lanzarote find themselves.
Carmen Arrocha, president of AFOL, addressed all those present, pointing out that the association "is fundamental at all medical, care and psychological levels so that sick people know how to face and fight, to achieve that quality of life that we all desire and achieve the most precious asset, which is Health, and that little by little the Doctor José Molina Orosa hospital has all the necessary care and professional resources, where its clients receive their diagnosis, whatever it may be, and treatments, without needing to move". Finally, Arrocha pointed out that "from AFOL we believe in our professionals and we must reinforce them, but it is the politicians who have the key to decide and from AFOL we suggest that their political will be true; since, pretense only brings delay and vulnerability".
