The Department of Sports of the Yaiza Town Council has decided to launch a novel activity aimed at the elderly of the municipality, which consists of exercising the body in an unparalleled environment such as Playa Dorada, in Playa Blanca.
The lull of the waves, the fine sand under bare feet and the soft rays of the early morning sun are just some of the attractive ingredients that bring together almost fifty participants on the shores of the southern beach, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, between 9:30 and 10:30 am.
After the warm-up and stretching, the participants take a walk at a good pace with the sea water halfway up their legs, strengthening the leg muscles. Then they do "light" abdominal exercises and, for a while, they also handle a giant ball.
This initiative has been quite successful, which is why the gymnastics classes for the elderly will be extended until the end of next September when, in principle, they had only been planned for the months of July and August.
The Town Council emphasizes that "the students of the gymnastics classes have made their own the maxim of the Roman Juvenal: the mind relaxes and reaches an optimal performance when the body is also in a good physical state, or to put it briefly: mens sana in corpore sano".
